GOALS AND RECOMMENDED STUDIES IN PERIODIC HEALTH CHECK-UP

1.      Goals of periodic health check-up

(1)   Screening of diseases for early detection and effective treatment to be initiated 

(2)   Evaluation of current health problems and suggesting appropriate plans of disease management

(3)   Assessment of staff’s health status and proposals for changes of working environment if any to corporate leaders

 

2.      Rationale for theses recommendations

These recommendations are made on evidence-based medicine and proposed in the AFFP official revision in 08/2005. Other inputs are from relevant WHO papers and the Vietnamese Ministry of Health with regards to the national disease trend and epidemiology. 

3.      Recommended package

Two main parts are physical examination and investigations.

(1)   Physical examination:

-     Data collection on health status, past medical history, both personal and family

-     Measurement of vital signs: pulses, blood pressure, height and weight

-    Physical examination with a physician, including

(2)   Investigations

         - Chest X ray: to evaluate the heart, the lungs and the thorax.

         - General abdominal US: to check intra-abdonimal organs (e.g., the liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, bladder, uterus, ect.)  

-     Blood tests include

a. Complete blood count: to check for blood disorders (e.g., anemia, infection)

b. Blood sugar (glucose): to screen for diabetes

c. Kidney function tests (urea and creatinine)

d. Liver enzymes (ALT/SGPT and AST/SGOT): to check for possible liver injury

e. Lipid profile: to estimate future heart disease risk, including cholesterol total, HDL (good cholesterol), LDL & Triglycerides (bad cholesterol)

f. HBsAg, HBsAb (Anti HBs): to screen for Hepatitis B (HBV) infection and vaccination candidacy

Urine test: to check kidney function and other urinary disorders

(3)   Optional investigations:

-     ECG: to check electrical activities of the heart

-     Other liver function tests: Bilirubin (total and direct/indirect), Alkaline phosphatase, GGT

-     Hepatitis C screening: HCVAb (Anti HCV)

-     Risk of prostate cancer for male > 45 year old: PSA

-     Pelvic check

a. Speculum check and manual exam: doctors perform

b. Pap smear: to screen cervical cancer

c. Wet Mount: to check for pathogens causing vaginal genital infection

- Breast exam and breast US: to check for breast disorders and to screen breast cancer    

4.      Other investigations:  Based on physical findings and history review in each individual case, doctors will advise on further investigations or work-up
